Whole number arithmetic
APPENDIX

ADDITION

Addition is nothing more than saying: I now have a certain number of objects. I'm going to get some more of the same objects. How many of these objects will I have when I'm finished?

This is illustrated below in the following diagram.

O  O  O  O  O
+
O  O  O  O
=
O  O  O  O  O  O  O  O  O
5 circles
plus
4 circles
equals
a total of 9 circles.

Here is another example of addition

O  O  O  O  O  O  O
+
O  O  O
=
O  O  O  O  O  O  O  O  O  O
7 circles
plus
3 circles
equals
a total of 10 circles.

Rather than continually count every time you want to add some items, we have definite rules establishing the totals of any two single digit numbers. You will find all of these rules in the addition table.

Below you'll find what is commonly refered to as the addition table.
Study it!
Drill yourself on it.
Quiz yourself with flash cards that you either buy or make yourself.
Commit it to memory

Now you try your hand at adding. Click on the "generate a problem" button to see your problem. Place your answer in the text box and then click the "check my answer" button. You'll be told whether or not your answer was correct.

After you finish the problem, click on the "reset" button and then click the "generate a problem" button to see another problem. Keep on generating problems until you feel confortable with addition.
